The 8th edition of the Team Game Development Competition is already behind us!
Last year, the competition was more exciting than ever!

The Final, which took place on 1 July 2016, was hosted by Art_Inkubator in Fabryka Sztuki in Łódź. The competition is organised annually by the Institute of Information Technology, which is part of the Faculty of Technical Physics, Information Technology and Applied Mathematics (FTIMS) of Lodz University of Technology. Providing a forum for university-industry cooperation in the field of video game development, the competition is the biggest event of its type in Poland.

FTIMS has over 13 years’ experience of preparing graduates for the global video game industry. Apart from providing extra practice for students, the Team Game Development Competition, accompanied by the Conference on Game Innovations, enhances networking opportunities for academics, game industry professionals and representatives of cultural institutions who are passionate about advancing university-industry interaction and collaborative innovation.

The conference, organised jointly by Lodz University of Technology and the University of Lodz, centred around the GAMEINN sectoral programme, launched by the National Centre for Research and Development. It brought together the representatives of eight companies and institutions (the National Centre for Research and Development, Techland, Platige Image, CDProjektRed, Dotconnect, 11bit studios, Unit9 and Techmo) and ten Polish universities (Lodz University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, Warsaw University of Technology, AGH University of Science and Technology, Polish-Japanese Academy of Information Technology, University of Lodz, Jagiellonian University, University of Silesia, Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz and the Academy of Fine Arts in Katowice).

The format of the competition is constantly evolving. This year’s edition provided a range of new opportunities. The participants could not only present their game prototypes in front of industry leaders and independent game development enthusiasts (conceptualists, designers etc.) but also take part in open consultations with video game specialists. Moreover, all students had a chance to meet R&D managers of such companies as CDProjektRED, Techland, Platige Image, 11bit studios, Teyon and CI Games Dynamicznie, to name but a few. Selected teams wishing to further pursue and commercialise their projects will benefit from the mentorship and guidance of business incubators or business accelerators, such as 11bit Studios or Dotconnect.

The semi-final featured 28 teams (20 in the “Game Design” category and 8 in the “Game Development” category) representing 10 universities from all over Poland (Lodz University of Technology, Silesian University of Technology, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, University of Silesia, Jagiellonian University, Kazimierz Wielki University in Bydgoszcz, State College of Applied Sciences in Skierniewice, the Strzemiński Academy of Art in Łódź, AfiB Vistula ZSP9 Łódź).
